The Love Story of Brettany and Kevin

How did you two meet?

One day, a friend of mine pointed out that this boy who I had never met or even heard of was cute. Coincidentally that same week, I was formally introduced to Kevin from another friend. We had some of the same mutual friends which I always thought was cool and we quickly became Facebook friends. The school year came to an end and since we weren’t close, I thought we wouldn’t talk to or bump into one another until September. But, there was an instance where Kevin struck up a conversation with me on FB messenger wanting to talk about a Christian band. Also, another time in the summer where I ran into him in the park while I was with some of our friends as we were walking home from the movies.

Come my junior year, Kev’s senior year, our friend groups began to mesh together and we all started hanging out more – always in a group, never one on one. I kind of love that about us because we became friends before we were anything else. At first, I didn’t see anything with Kevin because I was only getting to know him little by little. But after being able to see him grow both spiritually, emotionally, and mentally as a person right before my eyes, I soon saw how big his heart was and is.

We decided to talk about it fully in person at the PickleBall tournament, and I can still recall most of the conversation from that late afternoon. November 09, 2009 – one of the greatest days of my life. From then on, we only grew closer and closer through the highs and the lows. It’s been almost ten years, and I am still so in love with my best friend.

How did you know he/she was the one?

It’s funny to think that I knew Kevin was the one at such an early age. It was one of those things where I just knew. As we got older, that feeling was confirmed by the way Kevin has always been there for me through the challenges that life has thrown my way. There have been many times where things got extremely difficult and he could have left, but he always made sure to stay and made me feel safe and secure. With him, I have been able to conquer all that has been a battle for me. I can’t thank him enough for all that he has fought through with me. He is my number one fan and I am his.

We were on a trip to California in 2017 — our first stop was San Diego. It was a normal day for us. We went hiking at the Potato Chip Rock trail that morning, and boy, can I tell you that I was exhausted after! I remember getting ready for dinner that night and Kevin had asked and said, “what are you wearing? Because I want to dress a little nicer tonight.” I truly did not think much of it — I just thought that he wanted to look nice. We go to dinner and our plan afterwards was to go to the Sunset Cliffs to watch the sunset.

After dinner, there was some time in between the time that the sun would set so we decided to drive around the neighborhood to look at some houses. Finally, we made it to Sunset Cliffs and by this time, I feel like I’m about to pass out from our morning hike. We got out of the car and we walked a little. Kevin then says, “let’s go over there to be more private” and the first thing that came out of my mouth was, “my feet hurt!!” We ended up walking farther anyway. He instantly grabbed my hands, all smiley, and started to profess his love for me. This is where I knew.

I started to giggle and I said, “is this really happening right now?!” And there he went, getting down on one knee asking me to marry him. The next thing I knew, Kevin pointed to his right and there was a photographer there capturing the whole moment! Kudos to him for listening because I did always say if there’s one thing I want at a proposal, is a photographer being there to capture it all. After that, we had a cute, simple and sweet little photo shoot.

When  +  where was your wedding held?

It was held on June 27, 2019 at the Whitby Castle in Rye, New York.

Describe your wedding day to us  +  how special it was!

The only word to describe our wedding day is “magical”. It was literally one of the best days of my life — I totally replay it in my head over and over again!! First and foremost, we had the best bridal party ever to celebrate with us. I had fourteen of my best guys and gals and Kevin had fourteen of his best guys. Honestly, our friends and family are what made our wedding. I had two maids of honor (my sister and my best friend) and Kevin had two best men (his brother and his best friend). All of our friends we’ve known since preschool to college and we have met them through different stages in our lives — it was truly special being able to celebrate with all of them by our side. Everyone who had a speech, gave a great speech as well.

We were so lucky to be engulfed with love from each and every person that was there at our wedding. We also couldn’t have done it without our parents, who have supported our relationship from the very beginning. They have loved us both wholeheartedly, and they helped us out so much with the financials.

Truly, we are blessed with all the individuals that we have in our lives.

Can you describe your dress shopping experience?

Initially I had only tried on A-line dresses because I thought those were the only ones that would look flattering on my body. But Polly from Wedding Hills convinced me to try on some mermaid style dresses and from there, I fell in love. I was scrolling through the online website from Jasmine Bridal and knew that style F201017 was the one once I saw it. The first time I tried it on, it fit like a glove and it was so me! I knew it was the one because of its style — romantic and elegant yet sexy at the same time. My Jasmine Bridal dress made me feel elegant and the most beautiful. It was truly a special dress.

Any other significant moments you’d like to share with us about your wedding day?

I was able to surprise Kevin by playing the violin for him. I played the song “Clarity” by Zedd. In an email to the bridal party, I had mentioned that when the beat dropped, I wanted them to come to the dance floor where I was playing for him and dance around us and that’s exactly what happened! It was so epic. Also, to my surprise, Kevin planned a little something for me too. At the end of  my second maid of honor’s speech, she mentioned that she was going to sing with a special someone and low and behold, she was going to sing with Kevin. They sang an acoustic version of Paramore’s “Still Into You.” It was extremely beautiful and I was in awe.
